Tiger poaching dropped nearly 60 percent in 2011 as compared to the previous year, though it continues to pose a major threat to the survival of the big cat in the country, a leading NGO said.
According to the Wildlife Protection Society of India (WPSI), 13 tigers were hunted last year as compared to 30 in 2010 - a decline of 57 percent. The bodies of poached tigers, seized bones and skins were computed to arrive at the figures. Click on date for more details

Seeing Tigers
If you are planning a trip to see tigers at one of India’s Tiger Reserves GTP recommends that you book with a member of Travel Operators For Tigers (TOFT). TOFT is a unique campaign. Founded by a group of concerned Tour Operators in collaboration with GTP, TOFT has now expanded to become a pioneering International ‘collective action’ campaign aimed at those within the nature travel industry and all visitors to India’s wildlife parks, to advocate, endorse and support more responsible use of wilderness areas in India, and the Indian sub continent.
With the increase of pressure from tourism on sensitive ecosystems, nature tourism can and must play an important role in saving the forests of India, today and for all our tomorrows.
